On Wednesday July 14, 2010 Sheffield Lake Mayor John Piskura held a ribbon cutting for the installation of a 100 kilowatt wind turbine made by Northern Power Systems, located in Barre, Vermont.
The Lorain County Commissioners congratulate Mayor Piskura for his leadership in support of renewable energy technologies and the installation Lorain County's largest, electricity generating, wind turbine. The Commissioners also congratulate Apples Grocery Store for agreeing to purchase the power produced by the wind turbine for ten years. According to Commissioner Betty Blair "this is the type of governmental and private sector support Lorain County needs to get things moving."
NexGen Energy offered to finance, install and operate the turbine in exchange for a commitment from the city to purchase the electricity generated by the turbine at predetermined costs for ten years. Mayor Piskura arranged for the Apples Grocery Store, whose operations use over 30,000 kilowatt hours per month, to purchase the power produced by the wind turbine.
NexGen Energy has partnered with Engineered Process Systems (EPS) for the installation and maintenance on all of their installations in the State of Ohio, including the turbine installed at the Sheffield Lake shopping center. Commissioner Lori Kokoski said "while NexGen is located in Colorado, EPS is based in Huron and they hire professional firms for geo-technical analysis, foundation design and electrical engineering; local workers to install the foundation, iron/steel workers and operating engineers to install the turbine, and licensed electricians to make the connections". NexGen and EPS are also members of the Lorain County Chamber of Commerce according to Commissioner Kokoski.
Commissioner Ted Kalo has long been a renewable energy supporter and hopes this installation will encourage other installations in Lorain County. Commissioner Kalo led the effort for Lorain County to join the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation better known as LEEDCo. According to Commissioner Kalo " LEEDCo's goal is to install five 4,000 kilowatt General Electric (GE) wind turbines in Lake Erie by 2012." "If Northern Ohio, LEEDCo and GE can work together to find ways to lower the installation costs while increasing electricity production from offshore wind turbines, Lorain County businesses and residents will get orders and jobs respectively" stated Commissioner Kalo. “Wind turbine installations are about creating jobs and economic development for Lorain County.”
